Richard Etheridge, “A Man among the Men”
African Americans served in a limited capacity in Outer Banks stations during the Reconstruction. Positions in the Life-Saving Service were made by appointment, and a few station keepers who were Union veterans hired black fishermen and inlet pilots, who numbered among the best watermen in the area.
